Chapter Nineteen
Collin
Another day. Another city. Another show.
After so much time on the road, it all blended into a mismatched array of late nights, early mornings, too many of Athena’s pills, and not enough time with Harlow. As much as I knew the pace of this tour would set me up for success, right there in the middle of it, all I saw was the work. All I felt was the fatigue.
Athena had been bitching about Harlow since we landed in whatever city we were in that night. Apparently, the extra hours for breathing she’d found me in the itinerary planted a stick so far up Athena’s ass, she forgot how to walk right. From where I paced the backstage area like a caged lion, I could hear the fans on the other side of the curtain, and that helped bolster my mood.
A little.
Athena following me like a demented puppy did not.
She kept pace with me as I stalked back and forth.
Back and forth.
Back and fucking forth.
The walls of this damn place were too close.
Each click of her ridiculous high heels added fuel to the fire of my frustration.
“What do you want me to do? Apologize for enjoying the time off?” I barked.
“I want you to tell your princess to leave your schedule to me.”
“Not gonna happen.” I raked one hand through my hair and gave it a tug. “Harlow knows I’m not a robot. I’m not sure you do.”
“I don’t push you more than you can handle.” Athena clicked her tongue. “I know your limits.”
“Do you? Or is it just that you have enough of those stupid pills in your pockets to keep me going when you find a limit?”
“That’s not fair.”
“Why? Because it’s true?” I stopped pacing. “Just…go stand over there.”
“I’m not done talking.”
“Well you’re shit out of luck, because I’m done listening.” I grabbed Stella and made my way onto the stage. The curtain was down and the mic was in place, but not hot. It wasn’t unusual for me to need few minutes out there before a show. Time to clear my head. To get into the right mindset. No one was to follow me past the wings. Everyone knew that. Even Athena.
I hummed quietly to myself, warming up my voice and trying to chase away the foul mood that had descended on me like locusts darkening the sky. The sounds of the crowd on the other side of the curtain went a long way to making me feel better. Seeing Harlow take her place in the wings to cheer me on did a whole lot more.
Athena was jealous. Plain and simple. Harlow took control of my schedule. She consumed the bulk of my attention. She made me smile when no one else could. She knew my moods. She had access to me when I locked everyone else out. And Athena couldn’t stand it. She wanted control of me, to hitch her wagon to my engine and take a ride to the stars. Always had. Always would. That was how it worked for people like her.
